Unique Publishing

A section “Scientific Library” has been launched on the site of the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve. Here you will find electronic versions of unique publishing, which are of much interest for both specialists and amateur readers.

This section has been created to promote the results of scientific researches carried out in the reserve and to provide free public access to unique information issued in small circulations or preserved in single copies in the archives of the biosphere reserve. The first and the second editions of “The Nature Records of the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve” issued in 1948 are sure to draw the attention of scientists as well as a wide range of people studying the nature of their native land. In the books there published basic information about the nature reserve and its activities in the first years after its creation.

The Board of Academics has taken a decision to publish “The Nature Records” on the reserve site annually, starting from 2014. Besides, in the library there will be open access to separate, the most interesting parts of the “Records” of previous years. Other volumes full of a great deal of special primary tabular information people can get by prior request.

On the reserve site, nature lovers will find electronic versions of unique books “Toponymy of the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve” (by I.N. Osipov) and “Archaeology of the Territory of the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve (by I.N. Osipov, A.K. Stanyukovich). In the books there described the natural features, which allow better understand the origins of their names, there summarized materials of archaeological excavations and there given some historical concepts that help evaluate the degree of human impact on the ecosystems of the reserve.

A multi-authored monograph titled “The European Beaver (Castor fiber L.) as a Key Form of the Small River Ecosystem” edited by Yu.Yu. Dgebuadze, N.A. Zavyalov, V.G. Petrosyan is devoted to the beaver environmental activity in the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve.

The reserve staff have digitized a book titled “The European Bison. Morphology, Taxonomy, Evolution, Ecology”, issued by the publishing house “Science” in 1979. In the monograph edited by V.E. Sokolov, a member of the Academy, there described and analyzed the systematics and evolution of all kinds of Bison and some aspects of morphology, ecology and ethology.

In the section “Scientific Library”, experts interested in problems of environmental conservation will find other rare books, as well as links to related publications.

In the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve, responsible and meticulous work on digitizing unique books is carried on. Those who are interested to assist in this important task can participate in the scanning and processing of archival files as volunteers.
