The need to create environmental observatories on the base of SPNR was discussed at the Russian National Science and Research Meeting. The meeting called “Stationery Ecological Research: experience, goals, methodology, organisation problems” took place in the Central Forest Nature Reserve from 15 to 19 of August.
Over 70 reports including 5 plenary and 35 poster presentations were presented at the event. The experience of organising research work in the Prioksko-Terrasny Biosphere Reserve was reflected in report by the member of the scientific department Sergey Albov.
Professor Yuri Puzachenko, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, appeared as an intiator of the meeting. In his plenary report, he presented the rationale for creating reserves on the basis of research facilities with basic measurement systems for continuous measurement and interdisciplinary studies of ecosystem processes. The main purpose for such environmental observatories will be a search for new, previously unknown properties and phenomena of nature. This initiative in organizing the work on the creation of environmental observatories got support from the director of the Institute of Ecology and Evolution named after A.N. Severtsev of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vyacheslav Rozhnov.
The organization of such a kind of interdisciplinary innovative research is only possible on the basis of a state project, which brings together the work of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, Ministry of Education and Science and Roshydromet (The Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of Russia). If such a project is realized in Russia by 2040, it will be possible to open about 20 observatories, the first of which must be created in a few protected areas, with the necessary laboratory facilities and scientific developments. And according to Yuri Puzachenko, the Prioksko-Terrasny Biosphere Reserve can be one of these pioneers.
