Recycling Day

Recycling Day history dates back to 1997 when the US first celebrated America Recycles Day, which was conducted by ecologists to encourage Americans recycling their waste and buying products made from recycled materials. After a while this holiday has started being celebrated in other countries as well.

This day is called to draw the attention of general public and heads of manufacturing industries to the problems of limited resources and environment pollution. The results of unsatisfactory waste management affect the ecological balance of nature, as natural resources are not endless, and mountains of industrial and household waste are one of the reasons of global climate change.

Every year tons of materials are thrown away, decomposition of which will take ages. Due to only plastic bags waste, 100 000 mammals, birds and fish die annually. When next time you throw a paper tissue in the sea, remember that it will be completely dissolved only in three months, while a plastic bag will float for over ten-twenty years. A thousand years will go by and only after that a typical glass bottle will disappear!

One of the problem solutions is recycling, thanks to which it is possible to save a significant amount of resources. Today recycling already allows to save the energy enough for heating and lightning about 150 million houses, while the energy saved by recycling one glass bottle is enough to lighten a 100 watt bulb for four hours.

In the framework of the International Recycling Day, different Russian cities hold ecological lessons, as well as waste paper and batteries collection and other environmental actions.
