In our protected forest — the winter “population census”

On February 10-11, 2018, winter surveys of animals took place in the Prioksko-Terrasny Biosphere Reserve.

Winter surveys of animals — is the most important annual work that takes place in every reserve in Russia. The purpose of this work is to determine the species composition and number of animals, first of all — ungulates and predators.
On these indicators, it is possible to assess the status of their populations in the reserve and in addition, the effectiveness of the conservation of the fauna. In Prioksko-Terrasny reserve it is already the 72nd annual winter surveys.

In the course of this work, scientists every day traveled more than 100 km of hiking trails, surveyed all the clearings of the reserve. Experienced pathfinders determined the species belonging to the trail tracks. Thus, scientists receive information on the number of the main animal species in the reserve. Then these data will be published in the Chronicle of nature reserve for 2018.
Already, according to the data obtained, it can be said that there are more roe deer in the reserve, and the number of wild boars has decreased somewhat. From the grouse birds Western capercaillie is found – the traditional inhabitant of the forests of the Prioksko-Terrasny reserve.

Inspectors and scientists of the reserve took part in the winter surveys. Young naturalists from the legendary Club of Young Biologists of the Moscow Zoo traditionally visited us. We say thank you to all those who came here to count our animals with us – V.Yu. Dubrovsky, Ana Kryukova, Sofya Klimova, Maria Shalova, Sofya Uzhviy, Anastasia Kulaevskaya, and also to our friends from Pushchino Vasily Demidov, Galina Khokhlova and Anton Khristin.

We will be always glad to see them at our guests!
