02/10/2025 “Bespalov readings”

The specialists of the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve took part in the XVI local history readings at the Pushchino House of Scientists dedicated to the memory of Yuri Bespalov, a local historian known for his research on the history of Pushchino and its suburb, who made a significant contribution to the study of the region, an author of the book “The Land of Vyatichi”, covering the history of Serpukhov district from ancient times to the present day. Every year historians, archaeologists, geologists and local historians take part in the readings. People who collect knowledge about Serpukhov land bit by bit, they meet to communicate with colleagues and share the latest scientific research. The Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve is the same age as the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, and on the eve of the 80th anniversary of this important date, it has done a lot of work to collect information about the history of the reserve, the events preceding the war and the war years. Vasily Demidov, Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve, demonstrated unique aerial photographs taken by German scout aircraft during the Great Patriotic War. Those images helped to restore the picture of the forest condition in 1945 when the reserve was founded. Ivan Goryachev, the head of the Oka archaeological expedition, also spoke about the achievements of the past excavation season in Serpukhov, in particular, in the village of Zibrovo and at the Spas-Teshilovsky settlement. Anyone can get acquainted with the work of the expedition and the artifacts, found in Serpukhov Poochye in 2024, at the Pushchino Museum of Ecology and Local History until February 28, 2025.

02/26/2025 Along the whitetrail

Winter route accounting in conditions of little snow has been successfully completed. Employees of the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve and experienced volunteer trackers walked along 11 routes and mapped all the animal tracks they encountered. The scientific department will compile all the data into a single table and calculate the number of individuals of each mammal species inhabiting the protected forest and active in winter. In general the fauna’s condition can be described as stable. The moose is still the most numerous ungulate species in the reserve. Moose tracks are found everywhere, and some accountants boasted of visual encounters, including with groups of females with grown-up moose calves. Spotted and red deer, roe deer and wild boar feel confident, but each species is inferior in numbers to the moose. Nevertheless the native habitats of the four species that occupy the second line of the rating are located in areas with milder and less snowy winters than in Moscow region. Perhaps all these species will like this winter and the herds will wait for spring without losses. Lynxes showed unusual activity. The accountants noted the presence of their tracks almost throughout the entire territory of the reserve. One of the inspectors noted the interesting behavior of the predator — moving in the footsteps of a young spotted deer, the lynx stepped with its soft, pubescent paws strictly into the hoof prints of the potential victim — strictly following the trail. The tracks of two lynxes were also encountered on one of the routes — a double trail with a lot of intersections. By all accounts, this is an adult mother and her kitten, who have been caught in camera traps more than once. In places there were quite numerous traces of hares. There were racing tracks of foxes. Squirrels were fattening in the spruce forests, and marten tracks were often found there, which traditionally feel good in the reserve. The interest was aroused by rare winter observations. Firstly, it is the footprints of an otter, a species listed in the Red Book of Moscow region. Secondly, it is traces of a beaver marked far from the river, which usually waits for winter in a hut with sufficient food supplies. Thirdly, it is the traces of a hedgehog waking up earlier. We hope that the hedgehog will not freeze in the frosts that will come after the winter, he will hide back in his warm shelter under the snag and will be patient with walks until spring.
