The 78th birthday of the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve is approaching on June 19, and we continue the cycle of “Amazing Saturdays”, when all our guests are in for pleasant surprises. On Saturday, May 27, a meeting with Ilya Murashev, ornithologist, biologist and researcher of the Reserve, took place. Everyone could take part in a 3 kilometer excursion walk “Reserved forest: a history of 78 years” after registration on the website. After the excursion program in the assembly hall there was an exhibition of modern biological and naturalistic illustrations “Watercolor Biodiversity”. Ilya Murashev’s artistic works can be seen in the identification of birds of Kamchatka, the Red Book of the Russian Federation and other publications. At the exhibition, the author himself spoke about how fine art serves biology and why modern photography has not yet replaced naturalistic drawing.
On May 29, within the framework of cooperation between Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve and the Presidential Academy of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, a series of online meetings of design students with specialists from the Environmental Education and Cognitive Tourism Department of the Reserve took place. Under the guidance of the leading teacher, Master Valentina Udintseva, the students took part in the online production practice. Three groups of students submitted their designs for souvenirs, website design and social networks. The works were discussed at online meetings, during which the Reserve’s specialists commented on each proposal and asked to work on some aspects in more detail. The interaction proved to be very constructive and fruitful, and the results obtained will soon be used in the Reserve’s work.
With care for the planet, with love for bison – GRASS
On May 31 an ecological action took place. GRASS volunteers and the famous actor Sergey Burunov came to help plant the enclosures of the Central Bison Nursery. The main goal of the event was to show an example of responsible attitude of business to the environment! Everything planned was done in time – linden and oak saplings were planted in the pen. The action was supported by the famous actor Sergei Burunov, to whom the theme of restoration of the bison is also very close. In 2022, he became an “adopter” of a bull named Mu-homor. Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve is very happy to have such good and loyal friends who have been helping us in all our endeavors and economic activities for many years.
On June 3, unusual volunteers visited the Reserve. Sergey Korablev, an employee of PJSC RusHydro, donated two clipping machines for crimping connecting clips to the Reserve as part of his charitable assistance. It all started when Sergei visited the Central Bison Nursery and noticed the condition of the fencing sections of the bison pens, especially in areas that had been recently repaired. Being familiar with modern technology, he realized how this connection could be made simpler, more reliable and durable, and most importantly, technologically advanced. On Saturday, volunteers helped the nursery staff learn how to use an unfamiliar product. We are very grateful to Sergey Korablev for this unusual gift, which will be useful in the large bison farm.
The video “Road to the Bison”, shot in the Central Bison Nursery a few years ago, became the winner of the XXVII International Environmental Television Festival “Save and Preserve” opened on 01.06.2023 in Khanty-Mansiysk. The plot is dedicated to the history of the last wild bulls of Europe and tells how people were able to correct their mistakes and return them to nature. Directed by Olesya Akinfeeva, cameraman Vladislav Kuzmin. Mark Akinfeev, who acted as a presenter, received a diploma in the nomination of the children’s television contest “I-Young Ecologist”.
The “School of Protected Friends” has come to an end
All last academic year, students of the Serpukhov College of Tourism attended a series of lectures devoted to various spheres of activity of specially protected natural territories of Russia. Specialists of Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve told about the protection of the territory, scientific activities, organization of tourist offers and volunteerism. On June 5, the last session was held directly on the territory of the reserve. The students held a volunteer event and helped with household chores in the Central Bison Nursery. At the opening ceremony of the School, each student was presented with a “Passport of a Protected Friend”. We hope that our classes helped future specialists of tourism activities to better understand what ecological tourism is and how to interact effectively with specially protected natural areas of our country.
Volunteers from the southernmost outskirts of Moscow Region
On June 7, volunteer help with landscaping of the Central Estate of the Reserve and pens of the Central Bison Nursery was provided by an organized team from the academgorodok of Pushchino. Pushchino. Pupils of the 7B class of the Pushchino Gymnasium and their like-minded friends decided to take up shovels and buckets instead of notebooks and pens. The little volunteers turned out to be experienced gardeners: they deftly dug, spread roots and watered. For a long time the Reserve’s specialists have not met such hard-working and patient helpers. Having completed all the planned activities, the young people and their teachers celebrated the end of the school year with a delicious lunch and hot tea – the children moved on to the 8th grade.
For several years in a row, Mosinzhproekt JSC, a major Moscow-based company, has been providing various kinds of assistance to the reserve. For the second year in a row, the company has been patronizing the little Muuglei bison from the Central Bison Nursery as part of the “Adopt a Bison” program. On June 10, Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve hosted a large delegation of employees of Mosinzhproekt JSC who came to get acquainted with the sights of the protected area, solve ecological riddles and see Muuglei in person. A variety of attractions were also waiting for our guests. Adults talked to the specialists of our specially protected natural area and got acquainted with the presentation devoted to the protected system of Russia, and children were offered to paint animal figures, taking part in the master class. The busy day ended with a “Reserve Quiz”, which required new knowledge and wit.
Herbs, grasses and sedges, legumes
Summer is the hottest time for the scientific department of the Reserve. On Wednesday, June 21, visits to the territory of Prioksko-Terrasny State Natural Biosphere Reserve were conducted by Galina Venia-Minovna Sokolova, a laboratory assistant of the science department, and state inspectors in the field of environmental protection. As a result of the visits, grasses were cut on two dry meadows: Semyonovskaya and Borshevna. The Reserve’s specialists were traditionally assisted in this work by volunteers and interns. The cuttings were divided into three fractions: grasses, cereals and sedges, legumes. They are left to air-dry for a period of time. In August the dried samples will be carefully weighed, the data will be entered into tables, and specialists of the science department will determine the yield of economic-botanical groups in each protected glade. Strawberry and bilberry productivity is next in line. And after some more time on two trial sites there will be counting of productivity of cowberries and cranberries. The data obtained will be included in the book “Chronicle of Nature”, which has been published annually by the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve since its foundation.
Film crews from various TV channels are frequent guests of Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve. Specialists of our Institution always have something to tell and show! But there are cases when according to the script plan it is not us who should be in the frame. On Thursday, June 22, the Reserve was filming the pro-program “Navigator” of the TV channel “Carousel”. Naturally, the heroes were children. Boys and girls accompanied by TV cameras, journalists and leading specialist of the tourism department Inna Sukhanova visited tourist objects of the reserve: the ecological trail “Road to the bison”, ecological park “Tree House” and high-altitude ecological trail “Through the leaves”. Having seen all the sights, the little tourists told the journalists about their impressions. Parents, don’t be surprised if soon your children will also want to visit the only reserve in the Moscow region. The program about Prioksko-Terrasny will be aired on the Karusel TV channel in August.
