Digest June 2021

In the national park “Ugra” 12 young bison were let out into the wild. Six bison from the Central Bison Nursery of the Prioksko-Terrasny State Nature Reserve and six bison from the Oka State Nature Biosphere Reserve went to join the wild population in Kaluga Region. The animals born in 2019 from the two nurseries spent a month in quarantine together. The male Muserzh and the females Mureika, Mugusta, Mureya, Mulisa, Munmelodi, became good friends with the 4 bulls and 2 females from the Oksky kennel. After the 30 days quarantine, they were able to leave the enclosure. This is always a very exciting moment – bison usually do not want to leave the familiar place for a long time, but this time it was different. Irina Zemlyanko, deputy director for bison keeping and breeding at Prioksko-Terrasny Nature Reserve: “The bison surprised us a lot – usually during the opening of the quarantine enclosure we have to wait several days until they muster up enough courage to come out. But this time we just had to call them and females from our nursery rushed into the woods, males were traditionally more cautious and followed them only after being sure of safety. We always try to attend a bison “graduation”, it’s a great excuse to meet colleagues and, of course, to see our pets off to free life”.

On June 1, 2021 begins a new stage, devoted to representatives of fauna and flora typical for the territory of Prioksko-Terrasny State Nature Biosphere Reserve. The fourth chapter, which opens the summer season, begins with the pride of the Moscow region – Cypripedium calceolus L.. This wild orchid is found in the deciduous forests of the middle belt of Russia. It is the first representative of the family Orchidaceae of the temperate zone, taken under protection (since 1878 in Switzerland), now protected in all European countries. Cypripedium calceolus orchid is the most unusual one, but it is not the only orchid of our forests. The representatives of this family have a great variety of flower structure and color – from the brightest and most unusual to pale, lost among the greenery of motley grass. As part of the competition, we invite you to study the local orchids on your own and prepare a report based on the information obtained. Illustrations or your own photos will be an excellent addition to your work.

The employees of the Prioksko-Terrasny State Nature Reserve took part in a large children’s festival “Multicolored Childhood” held on the first day of summer in Serpukhov’s park “Pitomnik”. The organizers of the event prepared an extensive entertainment program for city residents and guests, including contests, master classes, performances by vocal and dance groups, an animated show, and even a presentation of a children’s book. Master classes from the Reserve employees on how to paint plaster figures and identify animal footprints aroused great interest. Children and adults enjoyed being photographed with our indispensable assistants – the Bisons-dolls. Many participants had already visited Prioksko-Terrasny State Nature Biosphere Reserve and were therefore actively interested in the current life of this specially protected natural area.

It was detected in time and all available forces of the forest firefighting team of the Reserve were put forward to eliminate it.  The exercises were carried out using real firefighting equipment. Overall, 9 people and 2 units of special vehicles took part in the fire fighting activities. The simulated fire was extinguished and the level of actions of the forest firefighting team was evaluated as “good”.
