2. 11180 bison in the world

The next volume of the European Bison Pedigree Book for 2023 has been published. It contains information on the number of bison living in the world. The publication summarizes information from all territories where this species is being restored: zoos, nurseries, and places where bison live in natural conditions. Counting the number of animals kept in captivity or semi-free conditions is quite simple, but finding out the most accurate number of bison living in the wild is a more difficult task. It is solved by conducting a census when animals are concentrated near feeding areas equipped to support them in the autumn-winter period. It is because of this specificity that the data is somewhat lagging. The figures below are current as of December 31, 2023, and the next volume for 2024 will be published in the summer of 2025. The total number of bison currently living in the world (as of December 31, 2023) is 11,180, of which 8,812 live in the wild, 658 in semi-free conditions, and 1,710 in captivity. The leaders in the number of bison are in the following order: Poland – 2,821, Belarus – 2,713, Russia – 2,640 individuals. Russia is currently home to the largest free-ranging population in the world – the Central Russian (Oryol-Kaluga-Bryansk) population, which numbers 1,324 bison. Russia is successfully solving the problems of breeding and resettling bison in their historical habitats and in new suitable territories. There are a number of large specially protected natural areas and hunting grounds where the bison population can quickly grow in natural conditions.

3. Chest of Good

The Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve announces the start of the charity event “Chest of Kindness”. Traditionally, at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, when many ripe and juicy apples appear on household plots, and it is possible to process the entire harvest, we open our “Chest of Kindness”. Everyone can share their supply of vitamins with the bison. To do this, you need to collect strong fruits, carefully put them in bags or packages without damaging them and bring them to the Central Estate of the Reserve. An impressive oak chest is installed at the main barrier next to the fair houses. You can leave your gifts here.
