Digest August 2021

Prioksko-Terrasny State Reserve announces the completion of the fifth stage of the interregional environmental education competition project “12 Wonders of the Priokskoe Forest”! The topic of the hot July was a predator from the cool bogs – round-leaved sundew. For the contest we invited you to draw an unusual inhabitant of protected areas. We received so many entries and would like to thank you all for your attendance and invite you to join our future events!

August 2 starts a new chapter devoted to representatives of fauna and flora that are typical for the territory of Prioksko-Terrasny State Nature Biosphere Reserve. The sixth chapter begins with a bright beauty – the swallowtail butterfly. As the summer ends, the flight of butterflies is over, and we decided to acquaint you with the inhabitant of the middle zone, which could easily compete with its tropical relatives. This species was first described by Carl Linnaeus – he named it after the mythical doctor Machaon, who according to legend took part in the march on Troy. The butterfly can be found almost anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, but sightings are quite rare. One of the most beautiful and largest daytime butterflies whose size reaches 10 cm and attractive coloration and wings of rare shape, have always aroused interest among collectors.

Today, the first harvest of fruit has appeared on the homestead plots. The placers of apples are disappearing, sacks of zucchini are languishing, and carrots and beets are on the way. Meanwhile bison simply adore these fruits and root vegetables. Prioksko-Terrasny Nature Reserve opens the “Chest of Goodness”. Anyone can join the campaign. Just gather your harvest and bring it to the reserve. If you do not have a garden, but you want to take care of animals, go out to the forest and parks in search of acorns. After all, this is the most favorite and useful dainty of the bison.

Colleagues from the Losiny Ostrov National Park visited the Prioksko-Terrasny State Nature Biosphere Reserve. This national park is unique because it solves the problems of nature conservation and implements educational and recreational tasks. Today the staff of the Moscow Region Federal Protected Area turned into tourists for a day. They visited the Central Bison Nursery as part of the environmental trail “The Road to the Bison”, visited the ecological park “Tree House”, the high-altitude nature trail “Through the Leaves” and “Nature Museum”. How similar tasks are solved in our reserve, how the work of the administrator is put, how new freelance guides are trained, how the work of nature protection inspectors is organized, video surveillance and actions in emergency situations – this is only a small range of questions which were answered today. The Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve is open for communication. We are ready to share our experience and share our professional secrets.

“Adopt a bison” is the name of the Prioksko-Terrasny State Reserve animal care program. Its goal is to raise sponsorship funds to improve the living conditions, nutrition, and veterinary care of the bison in the breeding center. Since 2004, over 200 organizations and individuals have taken part in the program. Avtoradio Serpukhov joined the program in May. The company became the caretaker of a baby bison, which was born in the Central Bison Nursery on May 6. The employees informed the reserve’s management of their intention in advance and as soon as the bison came into the world, they were given the exclusive opportunity to name the newborn. The radio announced a contest for this purpose. Several names were chosen out of the many that were suggested by radio listeners, and then, by open voting, they chose the name that was used to name the baby girl. We wish Muradi all the best!

Today the Director of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Prioksko-Terrasny State Reserve” celebrates her birthday. Rodionova Svetlana Alekseevna is one of the best employees of the reserve system in Russia. Under her supervision the reserve has turned into a dynamically developing protected area and has become a platform for the transfer of best practices. She is not only a high-level manager, but also a bright person, who makes our whole staff proud! We wish Svetlana Alekseevna good friends, unforgettable impressions and good luck!

The mobile photo exhibition “Symbol of the year – the pride of the century”, which was presented to Serpukhov citizens by Prioksko-Terrasny State Reserve in mid-July, moved from Sennaya Square to the courtyard of the Serpukhov Historical and Art Museum. The photo exhibition is dedicated to the largest mammal in Europe, the bison, which almost ceased to exist in the wild at the beginning of the last century. Now visitors to the museum can not only enjoy the art, but also learn about the history of these ancient animal and interesting facts about the only reserve in the Moscow region and the Central Bison Nursery located on its territory.

Did you know that the hygrograph (a device for measuring air humidity) is based on the ability of human hair to change its length when the humidity in the air changes? And for maximal accuracy of the device’s work an undyed hair is used… of a blonde! The hair is stretched on a metal frame. The change in its length is transmitted to an arrow moving along the scale. The principle of operation of the device was discovered back in the days of Da Vinci. By the way, the device is becoming more expensive day to day. Maybe it is because there are less natural blonde-haired people in the world.
