The Prioksko-Terrasniy Reserve has called for the spring to come, met the migrant birds and made pastry “larks“.
In Ancient Rus the Christian feast of the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste was celebrated on March 22 as a traditional public holiday and had a name “soroki” (magpies). The today’s Birds Day is celebrated annually on April, 1. By bringing old traditions back to life, it plays a huge part in ecological upbringing of the younger generation.
This holiday helps to understand the birds living nearby better, encourages the interest in homeland nature, motivates to take part in its protection. The Prioksko-Terrasniy Reserve prepared an educational and enterta
ining program for the Birds Day. On April 2 children and adults took part in quizzes, competitions, solved the riddles about birds and had an excursion in the Bison Breeding Centre for free.
On the same day the reserve announced the results of the competition “Birds flat 2016”, which was held in two nominations “The Best Birdhouse” and “The Fairytale Birdhouse”.
The jury evaluated functionality and optimality of the birdhouses, their fairytale design, engineering solutions and craftsmanship. All the winners and awardees received memorable presents and diplomas. A pleasant surprise for everyone became a treat from the staff of the department of eco-awareness, they have prepared tea with delicious pastry – Sfințișori, which are called “larks” in Russia.
