A bird in the nest is worth two in the bush!

On Saturday, November 28th, at the request of the biosphere reserve employees of the company “Alp-profy” Sergey Dylyuk and Yana Shpigova inspected and photographed unfinished nest, where this summer arachnologist Rimma Seyfulina during the accounting work discovered and captured a pair of black storks engaged in courtship.

In summer, it was decided not to disturb the birds. Work on the inspection was delayed to the last slot and then finally all came together. The scientific leadership of this delicate process is carried out by Deputy Director for Research Yuri Buyvolov, and he also took part in it.

On the pine, selected by a pair of black storks, the unfinished nest with moss laying was found. Shots were taken. Measurements of the nesting site showed that its dimensions are 70 by 100 cm.

According to scientific publications, this space is not enough for nesting, but there are no trees around that could be suitable for the black stork nesting with a platform under construction.

To create the most suitable conditions for the habitat of rare birds in the reserve, it was decided to establish a platform (a type of artificial nest) in the same place, but at some distance and in a quiet corner. Scientists offered the birds an alternative for installing nesting platform. With the help of industrial climbers a wider platform with comfortable approaching is made, and pine that holds it is located in the quiet spot.

– The platform is made in a special way to imitate nest, – says Yuri Buyvolov. – If a bird selects our billet, it will be easier to finish building a nest the way to fulfill it’s needs. According to the experts of the reserve and employees of the “Alp-profy” who have extensive experience of steeplejack works on the installation of artificial nests, the best time for this process is the fall. During the winter the nest billet will pack and have more natural look. The company’s specialists have extensive experience in high-rise biotechnical works. Previously, they have established a platform for osprey nesting in the Lake Pleshcheyevo national park.
