International Migratory Bird Day

International Migratory Bird Day was first held in 1993 by the initiative of ornithologists from Cornwall lab in the USA. Today this date is celebrated in many countries around the world every second Saturday in May.

The main idea of the celebration is to attract the attention of national governments and the public to the problems of migratory birds. The global information campaign highlights the necessity of conservation of migratory birds and their habitats.

It is migratory birds that help to maintain the ecosystem balance in general, for example, there are some plants that only migratory birds pollinate. Knowing that every tenth species of these birds is on the edge of extinction, it is important to participate in solution of avian problems.

Every year the action focuses on specific subjects. Thus, in 2015 the emphasis was on the problem of the importance of preventing, reducing and mitigating the negative effects of the introduction of new energy technologies for migratory birds and their habitats. The slogan of 2016 was “Stop the illegal killing, taking and trade of migratory birds”.

Around the world, this day is devoted to themed conferences, educational lectures, bird festivals, educational actions and birdwatching excursions. Such a form of the event helps to make careful attitude to nature more popular, as well as helps people to learn more about birds’ lives, problems, and most importantly, help that you can give.
