November 12 is marked as the Day of Zinvy Sinichkin or Blue Tit (Sinichkin) Day in the folk calendar. It also marks the start of the national cultural and ecological action “Feed Birds!” in the ecological calendar. The action is organized by the initiative of the Russian Birds Conservation Union.

Despite the fact that Blue Tit Day has started being celebrated as an ecological holiday quite recently, its history goes back generations, to the folk tradition of celebrating the day commemorating Orthodox Cristian saint Zinovy Sinichkin. It is Zinovy who all the winter birds , including blue tits, bullfinches and waxbirds, fly to in anticipation of cold.

Since long ago the tradition of feeding birds was connected with lots of superstitions: if the blue tit whistles, then the sky is going to be clear, if it squeaks, then a chilly night is ahead, when there are many tit birds in a feeder, then there is going to be a snow and a blizzard.

The Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve takes an active part in the action “Feed Birds!” by organizing annual theme competitions and helping birds to stand the winter easily.

The action “Feed Birds!” is supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation and includes events on feed preparation, organization of regular birds feeding, creating and placing bird feeders, as well as agitation and propaganda work.

Winter is coming! Take care of birds! They have a fine feeling of winter coming and are first to wait for human help. Prepare the feed. Make feeders and feed the birds! They will thank you with overflowing trills in the spring!
